On November 2, 1949, the Weizmann Institute of Science, originally known as the Daniel Sieff Institute, was formally dedicated and named in honor of the scientist, statesman, and first President of Israel, Dr. Chaim Weizmann. It consisted of 10 buildings and a staff of 130. Though small, its prospects were promising. The State of Israel had been established and a flow of hopeful immigrants, among them young scientists, were pouring into the country. In addition, the Weizmann Institute's growing reputation attracted many scientists from abroad. Today the Weizmann Institute houses 78 buildings and a staff of 2,500. Its budget has increased to $180 million, while its deficit has diminished. Throughout its 50 years, the Weizmann Institute's standard of excellence has greatly influenced the development of modern Israel.
This year's Annual Report is dedicated largely to the research centers that have been established in the framework of a massive fundraising drive launched by the Institute - the Jubilee Endowment Drive. We are proud of these first building blocks, and are confident that they are the solid foundation for a drive that will reach - and even surpass - our goals. We hope and believe that the best is yet to come.
