Prof. David Harel

Prof. David  Harel joined the Weizmann Institute in 1980. He headed the

Applied Mathematics and Computer Science Department from 1989 to 1995 and was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science in 1998. He heads the Arthur and Rochelle Belfer Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. He works on a variety of topics in theoretical and practical computer science, including the exploration of the boundaries between problems that can be solved by a computer and those that cannot. He invented the graphical language, Statecharts, and is one of the creators of Statemate and Raphsody, software products that are used in major electronics, aerospace, automotive, and communications firms worldwide. A recipient of numerous awards, he has authored a book in which he explains the central ideas of computer science.  Prof. Harel holds the William Sussman Professorial Chair
