From the Chair

Gershon Kekst Chairman, Board of Governors
The Weizmann Institute of Science is now completing its first half-century.

This is reason for pride and celebration, to be sure.

More important, however, Weizmann begins its second half-century better positioned than ever for serious, productive scientific research. And this is reason for encouragement, excitement, and great expectation.

Therefore, it is our privilege to share the "jubilation," celebrating both achievements of the first half-century of the Weizmann Institute and rededicating ourselves to its continued successful growth in its second half-century and beyond.

We owe our profound gratitude to the family of scientists, members of the administration, donors, board members, and friends throughout the world who, over these 50-plus years, have made the vision of Chaim Weizmann come to life in Rehovot, Israel. To each and all of them we best express our gratitude through a continued strengthening of "their" great Weizmann Institute. May they be proud!

For us there remains a great task: To assure that this Institute's great potential will be fully realized. To that, we dedicate ourselves.

The adventure ahead promises to be ever-more remarkable.

From the President

Prof. Haim Harari, President

The Weizmann Institute in its 50th year is a place of constant renewal. Change can be observed everywhere - be it in the renovation and construction of buildings and laboratories, the new generation of scientists and staff gradually taking the place of the Institute's founding generation, or the emergence of exciting, new disciplines. However, rapid change is not a luxury. It is necessary merely to keep up with the scientific and technological changes occurring worldwide. And the Weizmann Institute, from its earliest years, has never been satisfied with just keeping up.

Now as never before the Institute has the potential to undertake unique, cutting-edge scientific research. This is because the Weizmann Institute, in which the various disciplines dwell side by side, is optimally structured to facilitate the coming together of disciplines. The recent emergence of common ground between physics and biology has been the most surprising of these developments. Even within the disciplines, the dialogue between the various branches has impelled scientists to learn the different "dialects" in order to give birth to something new. To maximize the Institute's advantage, what is needed is support for our excellent human resources, so as to free creativity from financial restraints.

Another objective of the Weizmann Institute is to make science a spoken language within the general population and to nurture the scientists of the future. The Institute is actively involved in the development of school curricula and is happy to give Israel's youth the opportunity to experience scientific adventures within the framework of organized school visits to the Institute's campus.

The Jubilee Endowment Drive has led to important and heartwarming contributions. With the help of our friends worldwide, there is a good chance that the Weizmann Institute may truly experience a golden age.
